Course description

Many of us love to play and listen to music, but why study it at university? What can historical, analytical, psychological, social and anthropological approaches contribute to our understanding of music? What is the connection behind the ‘dots on the page’, and how does this connect to the wider contexts in which music is written, performed and heard? These are the sorts of questions you can expect to explore during the UNIQ Music course.

The course is designed to give you a taste of studying music at Oxford and everything that entails, including its characteristic combination of lectures and tutorials. You will be supported by a dedicated team of current students. Of course, just like Oxford undergraduates, there will be plenty of time for private study in which you can explore work set, develop your own ideas and write them down (with advice and feedback from your tutors). The majority of topics discussed during the course are taken straight from the undergraduate course, so you’ll be able to judge whether it is right for you.

There is no need to prepare for UNIQ in advance. Your tutors will offer you guidance at every stage. The course will include advice on applying to study music at university, and help in pursuing further independent study.
